My husband and I had been in our new house for about a week the first time we noticed that it gets windy here. Gusts pushed chairs across our decks and made me start considering the wind portion of the weather forecast for the first time in my life.

On Friday, there was a hearty windstorm with gusts up to 60mph. Around dinnertime, we remarked on our pleasant surprise that we’d yet to lose power from these insistent winds. I knocked on wood so loud, I freaked out the dog and the husband.

Alas, my superstition didn’t save us.

Around 7:30pm, our power went out. It was already dark, so we couldn’t see what had happened. I went upstairs and grabbed my candles (Andy was amazed I knew where they were), while he found his headlamp. We hunkered down and waited for light to return.

In the morning, we found the source of the outage. A massive tree uprooted in the neighbor’s yard took down a power line, impacting the four houses on our little lane. I checked the power outage map and my heart sank. There were outages everywhere, many of them impacting 500–1000 customers. It might be a while before the lights came back on.
